WADE.
âOh, baby girl, whatâs wrong? Did I hurt you?â I cuddled Nancy while she was wracked with sobs.
If Iâd caused these tears by hurting her, Iâd cut my own heart out.
âNo. No. Itâs not you.â She managed to speak between each gasped-out cry.
âCome on,â Tanner said to her. âHop under the covers and lie with us.â He pulled back the covers and I managed to scoop her up and put her beneath the sheets.
Then we climbed under the covers too, one each side of Nancy. Tanner positioned Nancyâs head on his chest, and I stroked her back, staying close. I didnât like going second, after Tanner. He was the firstborn twin, the confident, suave and happy one of the two of us.
And when heâd made love to Nancy first, Iâd been filled with envy, then love for the joy Nancy got from their encounter, then disappointment that it hadnât been me. But as soon as she slid over to me and looked up with those eyes that were only for me, all the negative feelings fell away to reveal a wolf shifter desperate for his mate.
I didnât really want to share her with my brother, but Fate had decreed that we had to. Iâd do anything to keep her safe and happy, and if that meant she needed Tanner as much as me, then thatâs what would happen.
Her happiness was paramount. I dipped my fingers into her hair, playing with the strands, hoping our touch would soothe her.
Tanner found a Kleenex box from the bedside table and grabbed a few for Nancy to cry into. When she was finally done, she blew her nose, mopped her face, then excused herself to use the bathroom.
She slid out from between us and we were left alone, together.
âWellâ¦. Ahâ¦â I sat up with my back against the headboard and looked at Tanner. âDo you know what that was about?â
He slid further down under the covers, but stayed as far away from me as he could get. âDonât ask me. Iâve never made anyone cry before.â
I had, once or twice. But only because the womenâs orgasms had been so intense. Theyâd laughed as they cried. Not the way Nancy had sobbed, like her heart was broken.
âIâ¦â Nancy stepped back into the room, a towel wrapped around her.
âDo you want a night shirt or something?â I asked, jumping from the bed to grab a flannel shirt out of my collection.
âThanks,â she said, walking up to take it, then turning her back to slide the shirt on.
I stared at her back and almost smirked at the action. Turning away now seemed a bit like the proverbial shutting the door once the horse had bolted, but whatever she needed was fine by me.
But I couldnât stop myself from adding, âCovered all your beauty up now?â
She shrugged and rushed back to the safety of the blankets, and our bed. I stared after her, glanced at my brother, then joined her again in bed. This time she cuddled onto
